Open source solutions have thriving communities built around them formed with common purpose and passion. The community is truly global and builds concepts and capabilities in a more rapid manner by multiplying the effort and sharing the workload.
Collective ideas and thoughts delivered through the power of many. An open exchange of ideas between many talented people provides a basis for rapid development and troubleshooting when issues do arise. Apache Software Foundation has over 7,000 code committers—that’s a lot of developers working on your software.
You get to see and understand all parts of the code base and the key decisions that are made around development of features and bug fixes. We all benefit and learn when information, code, and capability are all open, negating the risks associated with vendor and technology lock.
With a worldwide community supporting a code base, rather than one team within one company, code is developed on online forums and guided by experts. The output tends to be extremely robust, tried and tested code.
Similar to open source software’s advantages in reliability, the code is often more secure because it is thoroughly reviewed and vetted by the community.
The best ideas will always rise to the top. There is no underlying agenda or push in a specific direction that is best for the corporation. This ensures that the code base is generated from a basis of pure purpose and not clouded by competing agendas. The only motivation behind decision-making is to make the best, most useful solution possible, and Apache Software Foundation remains 100% volunteers for all code/ development related activities.
Because open source solutions are openly available and can be explored for free, it’s often much faster to investigate options and get solutions off the ground.
No licensing fees obviously means that the total cost of deploying an open source solution is always going to provide more value.
Using proprietary software for critical applications increases the risk of vendor or technological lock-in. Enterprises can be at the mercy of price increases and lack of flexibility they can’t easily escape. Open Source frees you from this cycle.
Large enterprises are now implementing open source solutions and often making policies out of doing so. These businesses and the strength of their resources are now a part of those communities that support such solutions.
