Instaclustr Insights provide meaningful insights into team members’ work lives. This time it is Alexander Jurkovic– HR and Recruitment Support Officer, Instaclustr.
What does your role at Instaclustr entail?
My role at Instaclustr primarily involves the end-to-end recruitment and onboarding process of new employees into the company, along with supporting the rest of the Human Resources team on a daily basis with all manner of other HR. This can include assisting with aspects of HR administration, training and development, employee engagement, performance management, employee health and wellbeing, and other miscellaneous tasks.
What does a typical day look like for you?
During a period of heavy recruitment (which there has been a lot of recently due to the growth of the company) my days can be very busy. I begin each day by clearing the email queue—in particular looking through all new applications for job postings. My day will then consist of targeted recruitment searching, through platform’s such as LinkedIn as well as a number of recruitment specific activities such as additional CV reviewing, candidate screening through phone interviews, scheduling and implementing technical testing for candidates, booking in and scheduling interviews at all levels of the process, and creating and managing profiles for each candidate that are put through our recruitment process. Whilst I go into each day with a plan, the reactive nature of HR means that I never really know what my day will consist of as anything could come up, which definitely keeps things varied and interesting!
How did you choose a technology company for the HR domain ?
I have always been passionate about working for a technology company within the HR space. I may not have any of the technical skills that the majority of our staff have, but I have always had a passion for technology, with my goal being to work for a company like Instaclustr.
And your formal education followed in that path?
My formal education was never based around technology although I did always want to end up there in a business role. My first degree was straight after school and was a business degree majoring in events management. After I realized that I wanted a career in HR, I went back to study for a second degree specializing in human resource management that I have been completing part time on weekends and at nights whilst working at Instaclustr. I will be finishing up that degree in May this year which is very exciting.
When did you join Instaclustr—and why?
I joined Instaclustr in March 2020 so have been with the company for around 10 months now. As I mentioned previously, it was always my aim to join a technology company so as soon as I saw the position being advertised I jumped at the chance to join, especially considering the minimal amount of private tech companies that exist in Canberra. I was excited to join and have never looked back!
What’s been your favorite part about Instaclustr since joining?
My favourite part about working for Instaclustr is definitely the people and the culture here. There are plenty of social events and chances to get to know the employees from various teams within the company. We have such a diverse work group and it is really interesting to work with so many people from different cultures and backgrounds. The relaxed working dress code is also a benefit that I embrace wholeheartedly.
In your opinion, what makes someone a good fit to be in Instaclustr?
In my opinion, the perfect fit for someone at Instaclustr is anyone who is ambitious and excited about joining an evolving company and wants to grow with the company as it continues to expand. People who enjoy the social aspects of a good workplace culture and love to get involved with events and activities will feel right at home at Instaclustr. It is a really fantastic time to join this company, and we are always on the lookout for people who genuinely want to join our tech family for the wild ride ahead!
